WALKING FOOTBALL LEAGUE CONCLUDES

Sunday, 27th of October, saw our Walking Football squad take part in the latest regional league fixtures.

It marked the final round of fixtures in the 2024 Walking Football Over 50s East Championship League campaign and a final return to league duties in 2024 for the Saints in the Community Walking Football team.

The Saints in the Community squad were looking to finish their league campaign on a high, coming off two tough defeats to Arbroath and Fairfield before bouncing back with a crucial win against Dundee United in the previous round of fixtures. The 7 strong squad travelled to Dundee’s Regional Performance Centre, ready to take on another challenging yet exciting round of fixtures.

The first match of the day saw the Saints in the Community squad face up against the Dunfermline Dynamos. It proved to be a closely contested game, with both teams creating several chances. Unfortunately for the Saints, it would be the Fife team who broke the deadlock early on. With the Saints in the Community squad chasing the game they would ultimately concede a second, managing to pull one back late in the game. Unfortunately for the Saints squad it would prove to be too little, too late, and they would fall to a 2-1 defeat on their first game of the day.

The final Tayside derby of the season saw the Saints in the Community squad face off against Dundee United, with just one place separating the two teams going into the last league fixture. Once again, it would prove to be a closely contested match, with both teams eager to finish the season strong. The Saints started well, getting on the scoresheet early and controlling the tempo of the game. However, their lead proved to be short-lived, as Dundee United equalised to make it 1-1. Undeterred by the setback, the Saints continued to control the game, scoring a crucial second goal and taking a 2-1 lead into the final minutes. With some resolute defending under mounting pressure from United, the Saints held on to clinch a 2-1 victory as the final whistle blew on their 2024 season!

To wrap up the day, the Saints in the Community squad faced 5th-place Montrose in a friendly, presenting an exciting final test to close the 2024 campaign. Montrose would start the better of the two sides, taking an early lead. However, encouraged by their recent performance against Dundee United, the Saints in the Community squad grew into the game and would grab the next goal to level the scores at 1-1. In a tightly contested match, both teams delivered solid performances, and the game ended in a well-fought draw.

Game 1: Vs Dunfermline (2-1 defeat)

Game 2: Dundee United (2-1 win)

Game 3: Montrose (1-1 draw)

It was a challenging afternoon for the Saints in the Community squad, who performed well but ultimately lost 8th place in the league to the Dunfermline Dynamos, with the day’s first fixture proving pivotal to the final standings. Saints in the Community extends our congratulations to Forfar and Fairfield on their promotion to the Premiership, with Forfar achieving an invincible season by winning all 11 games in 2024. We look forward to seeing how the Saints in the Community squad fares in 2025, with fixtures kicking off in the new year!
