STRONG START TO 2025 WF CONFERENCE
Sunday, 2nd of March, saw our Walking Football squad take part in the latest regional league fixtures.
The 2025 Walking Football Over 50’s East Conference marked a welcome return to competitive action for the Saints in the Community squad as they kicked off their league campaign in the newly expanded structure. After finishing 9th out of 12 teams in the 2024 season, the squad found themselves competing in the Conference division. Travelling to Dundee’s Regional Performance Centre with a squad of nine players, the squad were looking to deliver a strong performance across three closely contested matches to get the 2025 season off to the best possible start.
The Saints in the Community squad got off to a flying start in their opening game, finding the net just two minutes in. The Saints then doubled their lead after five minutes, putting them firmly in control. However, a penalty was conceded shortly after due to encroachment, allowing Fairfield MH the opportunity to pull one back, which would be clinically taken. As the game neared its conclusion, the squad would go on to convert a penalty of their own, securing a well-earned 3-1 victory to start the season in style.
With no time to rest, the Saints in the Community squad then went straight into their second fixture against Tayport Whites. The opposition struck early to take a 1-0 lead, but Saints responded brilliantly, netting twice in quick succession to turn the game around before the lead was extended further to 3-1. The Saints looked set for back-to-back wins to kick off the 2025 campaign, but a dramatic final two minutes saw Tayport grab two quickfire goals, resulting in a hard-fought 3-3 draw and another point on the board.
Following a well-deserved break, the Saints in the Community squad returned to action for their final match against Forfar North. A slight tactical reshuffle was required, but nevertheless, the team adapted well, scoring midway through the match. This time, the Saints squad showed their resilience, defending resolutely to see out a 1-0 win and claim another valuable three points.
Match 1: Saints 3-1 Fairfield MH
Match 2: Saints 3-3 Tayport Whites
Match 3: Saints 1-0 Forfar North
With seven points from a possible nine, the Saints in the Community squad finished the day in 2nd place in the Conference, just behind early league leaders Fife Wanderers, who won all three of their games. It was an impressive start to the campaign, scoring 7 goals across the 3 fixtures and managing to keep an all important clean sheet to end the day.
A fantastic opening day for the team who will be looking to build on this momentum in the upcoming fixtures. Well done to all involved!
