TIME TO GET IT RIGHT AND SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD

McDiarmid Park recently played host to a very special event, as Saints in the Community welcomed pupils from local primary schools for a day of learning, creativity, and action as part of our ongoing Show Racism the Red Card project.

Delivered in partnership with Show Racism the Red Card Scotland, Perth & Kinross Council, and St. Johnstone Football Club, the event marked a new chapter in our anti-racism work - with pupils taking centre stage in the creation of a powerful educational video as part of the “Time to Get it Right” project.

This initiative sought to raise awareness about racism, promote inclusion, and give young people a platform to share their voices through the creation of a short video. The day brought together over 60 primary 7 pupils who have been involved in our education workshops, giving them the opportunity to explore, express, and lead anti-racism messaging through interviews, narration, and collaboration while capturing the impact of ongoing anti-racism education in Perth & Kinross schools.

The ‘Time to Get it Right’ video is being shared with primary schools across Perth & Kinross, encouraging further discussion in lessons, assemblies, and even at home. It provides a valuable resource for teachers, pupils and parents alike, and highlights the positive impact of anti-racism education when young people are empowered to lead the conversation.

Our Show Racism the Red Card programme continues to grow year on year. So far in the 2024/25 academic year, Saints in the Community has delivered anti-racism workshops to:

  • 41 schools
  • 53 classrooms
  • 1,160 school pupils

Since the programme began in 2008, we’re proud to have reached over 15,000 young people with these vital workshops.

The initiative wasn’t just about filming - it was about reflection, confidence, and leadership. Pupils impressed staff and teachers with their knowledge, creativity, and willingness to tackle difficult conversations head-on.

“My class thoroughly enjoyed the racism workshop! It was informative and engaging, making a difficult topic accessible for the children.” - Primary Teacher, Perth & Kinross

“The resources and activities were superb, the issues raised were relevant and appropriate for this age group” - Primary Teacher, Perth & Kinross

“Great workshop, lots of opportunities for discussion and questions. Children enjoyed the session and all were engaged. Thank you!” - Primary Teacher, Perth & Kinross

Saints in the Community continue to use the widespread appeal of sport to engage school pupils in our Show Racism the Red Card project; an anti-racist workshop delivered by our football coaches to children aged 10-12 years old across the county. Through our ongoing partnership with Show Racism the Red Card and Perth & Kinross Council, we are committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn about racism and the role they can play in creating a fairer, more inclusive society. We are extremely proud of the young people who took part and grateful for the continued support from Perth & Kinross Council and the Scottish Government.
